It’s too late! Artificial intelligence is everywhere

Elon Musk, Stephen Hawking and Bill Gates have warned about the potential dangers of unchecked artificial intelligence.

The geniuses have had some help from Hollywood films, going all the way back to the 1968 film “2001: A Space Odyssey” and all the way up to last year’s “Ex Machina.”

But this may be even more frightening: A.I. is already part of the operations within many companies we interact with every day, from Apple’s Siri to how Uber dispatches drivers to the way Facebook arranges its Newsfeed. In fact, Facebook is making research into A.I. a priority, with CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently stating that one of his goals this year is to “code” a personal assistant to “help run his life.”

Soon, the speeches that we hear from political figures may be the product of an AI machine that has been specifically designed to write political discourses.

There seems to be a formula to writing speeches. For instance, political speeches sound similar and tend to have a standard format. Arguments in these political discourses seem to be repeated as well. Speeches also seem to use familiar phrases that show the speaker’s certain political affiliation or ideology.

Robots could soon be able to read your mind – and we won’t be able to stop them because there are no laws against it, experts claim.

If expert predictions come true, by 2030 smartphones, tablets and computers will be able to examine our brain activity to see what we are thinking.

Initially this will be used for security as a kind of ‘pass thought’ – the user thinks of a specific song or thought which the device recognises and then unlocks itself.

People take nuclear weapons seriously — and they’d better get equally serious about the future threat of automated killer robots.

No, this isn’t a joke.

A panel of top experts in the fields of robotics, weapons and disarmament called on world leaders Thursday to lay the groundwork to regulate killer robots as tightly as the nuclear sector.

The experts, who spoke at the World Economic Forum in Davos, want the world to be ready for the day when killer robots become a reality.

Over five million jobs will be lost by 2020 as a result of developments in genetics, artificial intelligence, robotics and other technological change, according to World Economic Forum research.

About 7 million jobs will be lost and 2 million gained as a result of technological change in 15 major developed and emerging economies, WEF founder Klaus Schwab and managing board member Richard Samans said in “The Future of Jobs.” The findings are taken from a survey of 15 economies covering about 1.9 billion workers, or about 65 percent of the world’s total workforce.

Dr Amnon Eden said more needs to be done to look at the risks of continuing towards an AI world.

He warned that we were getting close to the point of no return in terms of AI, without a proper understanding of the consequences.

Dr Eden said: “The New Year needs to see this ill-informed controversy replaced by a better informed analysis of the potential impact of AI and of its applications.

“In 2016 expert risk analysis must gain a far greater role in the thinking of policy and decision makers, of governments and corporations.”

The DARPA Robotics Challenge put countless robots through a series of real-world challenges that involved driving, drilling holes, and climbing stairs. But let’s be realistic, the only thing any of us really want a robot for is housework, and that’s what ATLAS is finally learning.

The Florida Institute for Human and Machine Cognition, or IHMC for short, actually did quite well at the DARPA Robotics Challenge. But as the team prepares for future challenges, they’re putting their multi-million dollar ATLAS humanoid to good use by slowly teaching it to do basic household chores.

Humans 2.0: How the robot revolution is going to change how we see, feel, and talk

Robots aren’t going to replace us, but by working hand in hand with us they will redefine what it means to be human.

The year is 2025. You’re sitting in a surgery watching your doctor carefully insert the tips of her fingertips into black thimble-like actuators.

A screen in front of the doctor flashes with the image of a glistening tunnel of flesh and, as she huddles over the controls, you feel a stirring in your bowels.

That gelatinous mass you feel coming to life inside you found its way into your body 24 hours earlier, when you swallowed a pill that looked unremarkable, save for its bulk.
